About this deal

Best known for her collaborations with Axel Scheffler, each of these vivid rhyming stories is a triumph of imagination. This prompted me to unearth some plays I’d written for a school reading group, and since then I’ve had 20 plays published.

With sturdy flaps on every spread and rhyming stories that are a joy to read aloud, Cat's Cookbook joins the bestselling Tales from Acorn Wood which have been delighting parents and children for over twenty years. A slight shame about this book and the other books in the series is that some of the flaps are very small, and therefore fragile. The angles in particular of the book flaps seem to make them prone to damage, even with supervision. He is in P1 now and still reaches for these books for a bedtime story, he has almost memoried the words. Her other books include Room on the Broom, Stick Man and Zog, illustrated by Axel Scheffle r, The Hospital Dog , illustrated by Sara Ogilvie and the hugely successful What the Ladybird Heard adventures, illustrated by Lydia Monks.I studied Drama and French at Bristol University, where I met Malcolm, a guitar-playing medic to whom I’m now married.

All of the series are great for animal recognition and I have loved seeing my daughter initially point to, and now name the different animals. The illustrations are truly lovely and they have provided great opportunities for discussing friendship, woodland animals, and in this story, different colours (the books), food and sharing with friends. My daughter has broken flaps in previous books in this series and I wonder if it’s a matter of time before she rips one of these - I’m thinking the particularly teeny and fiddly green book. Julia Donaldson is author of many of today’s best-loved picture books including The Gruffalo and Stick Man. Her other books include The Hospital Dog illustrated by Sara Ogilvie, The Christmas Pine illustrated by Victoria Sandøy and the hugely successful What the Ladybird Heard adventures illustrated by Lydia Monks. Many story books are a bit more advanced for this age group and many books designed for this age group seem to be centred around non-fiction (in our experience), so we really have enjoyed collecting them all - I will always treasure them as the first stories and series my daughter has been interested in. More lift-the-flap adventures from Acorn Wood: Squirrel’s Snowman, Mole’s Spectacles and Badger’s Band.

I brought the whole collection of the books but I think this one is my favourite- the only downside is they’re annoyingly catchy and memorable so I end up wandering round saying the words which really just sums up maternity leave life lol! Axel Scheffler is a star illustrator whose instantly recognizable, warm and witty illustrations have achieved worldwide acclaim and numerous awards.

I really like these books, short and rhyming with lovely illustrations and ‘flaps’ for your little one to faff with and enjoy. Further books illustrated by Axel include Room on the Broom, Stick Man, Zog and The Smeds and the Smoos – all of which have been made into much-loved animated films by Magic Light Pictures. I really enjoy getting the children in the audience to help me act out the stories and sing the songs. Given that they are a series for the youngest kiddos, you would think the creators would plan for some rip-proofing or at least rip-reduction in their designs; sadly not.She was the UK Children’s Laureate 2011–13 and has been honoured with a CBE for Services to Literature. Axel’s artwork is exhibited internationally; he has illustrated for many charities and designed the Royal Mail Christmas stamps in 2012.
