About this deal

It is fundamentally a romance, seen from the female protagonist’s angle, though not a sentimental or yucky one!

Charming, gentle, innocent, fragrant (in a sense, as you’ll see) - I’m groping for adjectives in the least used parts of my reviewing toolbox to describe this fun story. He offers Effie a deal: she has 101 days to make Benedict fall in love with her and ask for her hand in marriage, with Blackthorn’s assistance. Lord Blackthorn was an interesting character from book one that we met briefly as that story unfolded and I was glad to hear a story with him.

She endures through much, and slowly begins to learn more about herself and the role she wants to play in the world going forward. This all happened exactly how I imagine a Faerie with good intentions trying to help a maid out would go down. Her down-to-earth attitude complemented the flighty Blackthorn perfectly as the two worked on their unusual plans. Effie is a terrific main character, and I appreciate the author’s spotlight on class divisions in the world of fairy tale romances.

Topping it off is a slow-burn romance, as Effie slowly realizes the qualities that are truly important in a person to make them worth loving. When Effie bumps into fae Lord Blackthorn, she is hesitant to accept any help from him knowing deals with the fae don't always go as planned. For Effie being a lady isn’t what she thought it would be after she gets to see how the other half lives. When Lady Culver learns that a rival now has French maids, she decrees that her own maids must be French too, and promptly gives them all new names. So, if Miss Buxley doesn't catch herself a husband, her choices are a 100 to 1 chance at landing a miserable life as a governess, ending up on the streets/prostitution, or marrying an old man and hopefully at least ending up with a house of her own. Effie knows what a terrible idea it is to accept help from one of the Fair Folk—but life as a maid at Hartfield is so awful that she is willing to risk even her immortal soul for a chance at something better. Both characters seem so incredibly naive about love and relationships, not to mention sex (which, incidentally, is never mentioned), that I had to keep actively reminding myself they were both adults.

In Ten Thousand Stitches, we meet hardworking housemaid Euphemia Reeves, who toils day and night to do the bidding of the awful Lady Culver. Stern and self-approving and hard backed chair Protestant which my Catholic raised soul has never responded to.brambleromance sent me CAN'T SPELL TREASON WITHOUT TEA, which will be traditionally published (with sprayed edges! French maids were considered to be a mark of class, but real French maids could command a higher salary because of this.
